World Autism Acceptance Day at MOV!

Join us on Saturday April 2nd for World Autism Acceptance Day at MOV!

MOV will be offering free admission to families with Neurodivergent members and have proudly partnered with Spectrum Skateboarding Society to offer families and kids programming and activities throughout the day!

This year we will be featuring:

Spectrum Skateboard Society

Spectrum Skateboard Society, founded by Blair Durnan, provides safe, fun and inclusive skateboard camps for youth on the autism spectrum.

Blair’s ultimate goal with Spectrum Skateboard Society is to give children and youth on the Autism Spectrum a chance to feel cool and a chance to feel like they truly belong.

Spectrum will be taking over the skateboard ramp in the Boarder X gallery throughout the day with skateboard workshops for neurodiverse children!

MOBILE MULTI-SENSORY ROOM

The North Shore Disability Resource Centre mobile multi-sensory room will be parked in front of MOV all day!

This multi-sensory environment on wheels with community in mind. It’s a health and wellness resource that can be used by children, young adults and the elderly in schools, hospitals and care facilities, first-responder communities, and so many more!

Kyle’s Kiosk

Kyle was born with CHARGE syndrome - deafness, developmental delays, coordination and balance challenges, and Autism is part of who he is - and although his journey has just begun, his experiences have made him who he is - and for Kyle that means never backing down from taking on the world.

Kyle’s Kiosk is also a way for him to understand our world. From the small amount of money he earns and saves up for what he wants by working on his crafts, to meeting new people at the shops that sell his crafts. It’s a way for him to learn valuable life skills to become more independent, confident, and self aware, and how to relate with others and work with them.

Nations Skate Youth - Skate Demo

Nations Skate Youth empower Indigenous youth to embrace their right to self-determination through the positive impact of skateboarding. They are an Indigenous-led organization who wants to inspire youth with their stories and encourage the importance of keeping our culture and traditions alive. The organization’s purpose is to show indigenous youth, the capability of what skateboarding can bring into an individual's life and share what it brought into their lives.

Cofounder Tristan Henry (Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in) will be onsite and doing a skateboarding demo for the public and visitors!

I Dream Library - Our Stories Live Here

I Dream Library connects students, caregivers, educators & organizations with intersectional 2SQTBIPoC literary selections, anti-racism / DEI training & teaching resources. This installation features a library with K-12 selections, bridging the need for equitable representation in education with themes of community, displacement, and self-representation found in skate culture. By grounding itself in Skate for Change, the installation showcases how various communities groups and organizations can come together and create real and impactful change.

Founder, Aisha Kiani, will be activating the space with engagement activities throughout the day!

curt: the story of surfing’s oldest grom - screening in gallery 11

"Curt: The Story of Surfing's Oldest Grom" is a heart touching documentary about Curt Harper, probably the best-known surfer in Southern California. Curt was diagnosed with autism as a child. In the past two decades, he became a beloved character in the central Californian surf spots. Filmmaker Brendan Hearne followed his footsteps and revealed his story.
