Making Vancouver's History: COVID-19 Museum Display Challenge
Recommended for Grades 4+
With the advent of COVID-19 we have a unique opportunity to document and record history as it happens in real time. Museums across the globe are working quickly to do just that by collecting personal stories of how people have been affected by the pandemic, as well as objects and other media related to this new era of physical distancing and social isolation. These activities encourage students to take part in the movement to document and preserve our shared experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. By creating their own COVID-19 museum display, students will contemplate the impact (both positive and negative) this experience is having on themselves, their friends and family, as well as the broader community. Students will also learn how Museums function and get a chance to consider the importance of these institutions for society.
Wild Things: Animals in our Midst Activities
Recommended for Grades: K - 3
These educational activities are based on an exhibition MOV hosted from June 2018 – January 2020, titled, Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives. The focus of the exhibition was on the life stories of local animals and plants—how they connect with each other and how people connect with nature in the city. By featuring taxidermy specimens of local animals, alongside stories of wildlife encounters told through the eyes of Indigenous people, biologists, psychologists, urban planners, and Vancouverites, the exhibit encouraged us to reflect on and engage in a mutualistic relationship with nature.
