Why I Design: 60 Years Onstage

Since 1963, the Arts Club Theatre Company has been transporting Vancouver audiences to many places and worlds through their set design. This October, the Museum of Vancouver is partnering with the largest year-round not-for-profit theatre company in Canada to bring you a special behind-the-scenes panel discussion on set design. 

A “pop-up” display of set models and maquettes will be on view before the event. Registrants will also be entered into a contest to win a pair of tickets to one of the Arts Club’s shows. 

Date: Saturday, October 28, 2023  

Time: 1:30pm - 3:00pm

  • 10:30am: Maquettes on view in the Joyce Walley Room

  • 1:30pm: Event panel begins

  • 2:15pm: Q&A with Audience

  • 3:00pm: Event ends

Tickets: Pay what you can: $10 - $20 (plus fees and taxes)

Tickets to this event include full day admission to the museum.

Meet your Panelists

Shizuka Kai

Shizuka is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on set design and puppetry, with some work in tv/film puppeteering, illustration & graphic design, directing, and jewelry making. Recent credits include Sense and Sensibility (Arts Club), Division Infinity Saves the World! (Neworld), Something Rotten (TUTS), Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls (CTYP), Clean/Espejos (Neworld), and Le merveilleux voyage d'Inès de l'Ouest (Théâtre la Seizième). Shiz is a five-time Jessie Richardson Award winner with multiple nominations, Ovation Award winner, the recipient of the Earl Klein Memorial Scholarship / Bill Millerd Artist Fund / Steven B Jung Award, and a graduate of Studio 58.

 

David Roberts

David completed his MA in scenography in London and Prague and since has designed shows across Canada and the UK. He brings an artist’s aesthetic to his search to find the visual and emotional essence of a piece.

Recent stage work includes Butcher for Prime Cuts Collective, Mama Mia for the Arts Club, Kill Me Now for Touchstone, Body Awareness, Lungs, Snowflake and Instantaneous Blue for Mitch and Murray and Crazy For You for Royal City Musical Company. Upcoming in November 2023 is Blood Wedding for Studio 58.

David is a multiple Jessie nominee and winner, has been nominated for the Canadian Screen and Leo awards and is a member of the Associated Designers of Canada.

 

Alison Green

Alison’s career has ranged from design for theatre, television and events to teaching costume and set design at UBC. She has designed for the Arts Club Theatre Company, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Playhouse, Studio 58, Carousel Theatre, Victoria’s Pacific Opera, The Belfry, and Magnus Theatre in Thunder Bay. Her work was last seen at the Stanley Theatre in the productions of A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Sense and Sensibility

Alison has received several Jessie Richardson Awards and nominations for her work. She is a Professor Emeritus of UBC’s Department of Theatre and Film. Alison is a member (retired) of the Associated Designers of Canada.

 

Meet your Moderator

Ted Roberts

Ted grew up in Saskatoon where he was involved in his high school’s theatre program building and designing sets for the school shows and local amateur theatre companies. He went on to take four years of theatre design training at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, for a BFA in theatre design. 

He worked for a year as Assistant Designer at Theatre Calgary. He joined the Arts Club Theatre Company in 1979, first as an Assistant Designer, and then in 1982 as Resident Designer. In this role, he designed over 400 productions and was also nominated for over 20 Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards, seven of which he won. Recent designs at the Arts Club include lighting for The Cull, and sets for Beneath Springhill, The Birds and the Bees, and Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley

Ted has also designed locally and across the country for theatre and dance companies, including City Stage, Bard on the Beach, Carousel, Axis, Touchstone, Firehall Arts Centre, Richmond Gateway, Rumble, Vancouver Playhouse, Green Thumb, Neptune Theatre/Halifax, Centaur Theatre/Montreal, Canadian Stage/Toronto, Magnus/Thunder Bay, Persephone/Saskatoon, Citadel/ Edmonton, Theatre Calgary, WCTC/ Kamloops, Theatre NW/ Prince George, and Belfry/ Victoria. 

He’s particularly proud to have designed premiere productions for over 50 new Canadian plays, including: It’s Snowing on Saltspring by Nicola Cavendish; A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline and  Red Rock Diner by Dean Reagan; Memoir by John Murrel; Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata by Bill Richardson and Veda Hille; Up Island by David King; Paradise Garden by Lucia Frangione; Thanks for Giving by Kevin Loring; and The Cull by Michele Riml and Michael St. John Smith. 

Over the past 30 years the Arts Club has toured many productions throughout British Columbia and often to other regional theatres across the country. Ted has designed, drafted, and focused hundreds of lighting plots and floor plans to fit those shows into those theatres.
