About the Book:
First Nations culture is living, vibrant and evolving—and generations of Indigenous kids have grown up with pop culture creeping inexorably into their lives. From gaming to social media, pirate radio to garage bands, Star Trek to D&D, and missed connections at the pow wow, Indigenous culture is so much more than how it’s usually portrayed. Indiginerds is here to celebrate those stories!
About the Speakers:
Alina Pete (they/them) is a nehiyaw artist and writer from Little Pine First Nation in Saskatchewan. They grew up urban but spent summers wandering in the Qu’Appelle Valley with their cousins from Cowessess First Nation. Alina is best known for their Aurora Award winning comics, but they also write short stories and poems, and their work has been featured in several Indigenous comic anthologies. They are the creator and editor of the comics anthology Indiginerds: Tales from Modern Indigenous Life. Alina lives on unceded Kwantlen, Katzie, Semiahmoo and Tsawwassen land with their partner.
Jordanna George is an artist of mixed T’Sou-ke and Ukrainian ancestry. Originally from Sooke, BC, they now live on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) nations in Coquitlam, BC. They received a BFA from the University of Victoria in 2019, and have since been making comics and illustrations, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and hope, and pulling influence from Indigeneity, queerness, and science fiction, with a graphic novel coming from Conundrum Press in 2026. They can be found at jordannageorge.com and on social media as @raebirdart.
